Long-haul honeymoon
I’m getting married at the end of August and need some honeymoon advice, please. We want three weeks away with good weather, and we want to travel long-haul and experience a combination of city, adventure and relaxation. My fiancé Simon is really keen to see some cultural sites. Viv, UK

Three weeks in South-East Asia gives you the chance to combine all the things you are looking for. You can visit Singapore, a city which combines East and West. Visit the markets and temples in Chinatown and Little India, and have afternoon tea or a Singapore Sling at Raffles Hotel. Then move on to Bali, for relaxation and adventure. There are some lovely hotels on the beach and a range of resorts to choose from. From here you can visit temples and see cultural shows. You must go into the interior and stay at Ubud, the handicraft centre of Bali. You can take some great treks from here, and experience white-water rafting.

August in Malaysia is the dry season (the monsoon season starts in November). You could fly to Kuala Lumpur for three or four days, a city that’s rich in culture and history, as well as being very 21st-century, then take the train up to Singapore for a few more days of culture and city life. Then head off to Taman Nagara, Malaysia’s largest national park, for five or six days. Stay in a lodge in the rainforest and you can visit the elephant sanctuary, climb Mount Kinabalu (not difficult for the fairly healthy) and do the Canopy Walk in the treetops. Finally, for some indulgent relaxation, take the ferry or fly to Langkawi island in the Andaman Sea, with some of Malaysia’s best beaches.

A summer wedding can be a problem, as that's when most long-haul, exotic destinations are not at their best weather-wise. But there are a few exceptions:

Hawaii can be combined with a stopover on the USA's West Coast. You should visit at least two islands, for instance Maui and Oahu, and combine the beauty and culture of these stunning destinations with perhaps a few days in Los Angeles or San Francisco.

How about a desert adventure based in Scottsdale, Arizona? It’s dry and arid (300 days of sunshine a year), with excellent resort hotels. The area has an abundance of history echoing its native American past, which can be combined with a stay in Las Vegas and visits to the Grand Canyon and other national parks further north.

Most people think that this is the rainy season in Thailand… but it’s not in Koh Samui, as it's in the Gulf of Thailand and not the Andaman Sea like the Phuket area. It is hot – very hot – but if that's OK then this will certainly fill the need for an exotic destinaton and can be combined with a few days of Thai culture in Bangkok.

South Africa has perfect weather at this time of year, not too hot and not too cold. I’d recommend Thonga Beach Lodge, right on the beach near Sodwana Bay on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, in the heart of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park. It has luxury beach-facing chalets and offers game drives, snorkelling and diving. You can then visit Phinda Private Game Reserve for a few nights at their Forest Lodge, viewing the animals of southern Africa, and then travel on to Durban for uShaka Marine World and the city’s nightlife.

Alternatively, the glitz and glamour of Sun City will satisfy your need to be in a city, with a large choice of things to do and see – everything from game drives to golf, gambling to watersports.
