David Speaks Out - Travel Insurance – cheapest is not always best

The press have been telling holidaymakers not to buy travel insurance from travel agents. They claim that agents’ policies are overpriced and you’ll find cheaper policies elsewhere.

Yes, you can often find cheaper policies online and in non-travel retailers. But will a cheaper policy be right for you and your family?

Insurance companies offering low-price travel cover are ‘cherry picking’ their customers. That can be fine if you are healthy, reasonably young, take simple, unadventurous holidays and are prepared to make a high contribution to any monies you receive should anything, heaven forbid, happen to you on your travels.

As some of you know from experience, our travel counsellors are on call to help you whatever happens when you’re away. But it’ll be your insurance company that’ll recompense you for lost luggage, medical bills and special flights home.

As leading travel agents, we believe passionately in our duty to care for all our customers. That means making sure you travel with the best possible insurance at the best possible price. And for travel insurance, the best is rarely the cheapest. The best policies however do offer value for money and have far fewer exclusion clauses. Ask any skier with a broken limb, a 60 year old with a history of heart disease or a family who waved goodbye to their suitcase at Gatwick never to see it again.

If you already have a policy or you prefer to buy elsewhere, that’s fine. We simply ask you to sign an indemnity form. But don’t believe the press when they say all travel agents sell overpriced policies to boost their profit margins. Maybe some do. But not Travel Counsellors. We want you to travel with the best cover possible. We just don’t think it’s our place to make money out of selling you insurance.
