Why go? A holiday to Africa is exciting! And it's quite acceptable to squeal with delight when you first see giraffes, elephants or lions roaming the wilds... Many families now go on safari, taking children as young as eight, and it's an enjoyable and educational experience for all. Spend some time in the bush then relax by the beach, and try to avoid making too many long drives. Kenya sadly, used to be a good choice for families and delivered a memorable taste of the ‘classic' Africa. Hopefully things will get back to normal there one day. Tanzania and South Africa are worth considering as family choices. So is Zambia.
Best for Wildlife-lovers. Families who like to travel with other families. Holidays with older children.
Best avoided Big cities. Malaria - ask your GP for advice, or there are parts of southern Africa that are malaria-free.
Need to know Some countries require a visa, which is often available on arrival. Check when the rainy season is in the country you plan to visit. Pack clothes in subdued shades to wear on safari.
TC Tip If you've always wanted to see whales, head to Hermanus in South Africa between August and October. Scores of them can be seen from the cliffs and on boat trips - see www.hermanus.co.za. />
