Why go? There's nothing like a big trip to introduce children to the pleasures of travel, and Australia is a safe, welcoming and hugely enjoyable destination. Your kids will love the beaches, seeing wildlife that ranges from koalas to kookaburras, and learning about life in the Outback, Aboriginal culture, the explorations of Captain Cook and Sydney's convict past. Meanwhile, Mum and Dad can look forward to great wines, delicious fish and seafood, and some easy living Aussie-style. It's worth going for three weeks - Sydney can be cold and wet in August (their winter) so include some time on the Queensland coast, which is warm and sunny.
Best for Beach-lovers. A holiday with lots to see and do. Families with a good appetite - the tucker's great!
Best avoided Jellyfish - heed local warnings. Too much driving, which is no fun for children.
Need to know All visitors need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority), which Travel Counsellors can help arrange. Australia is crossed by long-distance trains that older children will enjoy.
TC Tip Consider a stopover en route - it breaks up the long flight and is a chance to see another part of the world. Singapore is an excellent choice and kids love going to the Night Safari at Singapore Zoo (www.nightsafari.com.sg). />
