Why go? No state evokes the good life in America better than California. We've all seen the films, sung the songs, bought the clothes, drunk the wine - now it's time to enjoy the real thing. Besides the glamour and sights of LA and San Francisco, there are memorable natural attractions too - the mountains of Yosemite, the sun-scorched deserts of Joshua Tree, forests of redwood trees and scenic drives beside the terrific Pacific... The food is superb, the weather's heavenly, there's lots to see and do - and best of all, your kids will love you forever for taking them there.
Best for A fly-drive holiday. Families with teenagers. Movie fans
Best avoided The wrong parts of LA. Getting lost in the desert. A day trip to Tijuana in Mexico - it's not worth it.
Need to know A car is useful but parking gets expensive. Only rent one when you're ready to leave the city, and make sure your hotel is in the best location to suit your particular interests.
TC Tip Don't miss Hearst Castle, the home of publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst. Set high on a hill and extravagantly decorated, it's one of those amazing, only-in-America sights you never forget. Tours must be booked in advance, see www.hearstcastle.org. />
