Six Best Ski Resorts
Which are the world’s best ski resorts? More to the point, which is the best one for you? Whether you’re a novice or a black-run ace, James Bedding helps you decide
Where is the best place in the world to ski? Well, it depends who’s asking. A big-name resort may be thrilling for experts, but a disappointment for beginners, or impractical for a group with skiers of mixed ability – not to mention non-skiers. Which brings us to another important point: there is much more to a snow holiday than skiing (or snowboarding, or the many other wonderful sports on offer). Snow holidays are about having time to relax and enjoy the mountain scenery and local cuisine, and to try out new experiences – anything from taking a ride in a sled pulled by huskies to wallowing in a hot spring as the snow falls gently all around.
Here, then, is our pick of six resorts that offer not only world-class skiing and snowboarding, but much more, each in a very different way. We’ve also suggested a few quirkier destinations, for the more adventurous skier. For a glimpse of the slopes, check out the webcams on the websites of the resorts, where you’ll also find full details about lifts, snowmaking facilities, and reports of snow conditions throughout the season.
In the course of searching for the perfect snow holiday, James Bedding has travelled from the Alps to Japan, from the Himalayas to Scandinavia, from the Pyrenees to the Appalachians and from the Rockies to the Balkans, trying his hand at everything from ski-jumping, ski racing, ski touring, cross-country skiing, telemark skiing, cat-skiing and snowboarding to all-night après-skiing.
