Six Reasons to go Down Under - Tips
Posted On 02.10.07
  • Don’t try to cover the whole of Australia in one trip unless you are going for a long time. It’s a very big country so choose just two or three regions depending on how long you are visiting. You can always go back another time and see different areas. Joanne Cowdery, Travel Counsellor

  • Would you do Moscow, Athens, Barcelona and Edinburgh in the same holiday? Of course not, so why try to visit Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Darwin in the same trip? I suggest you do no more than one city for every five days that you’re away. Allowing for at least one night’s stopover, you’ll end up with at least four nights in each destination. Trevor Smith, Travel Counsellor

  • A popular first trip is Sydney, Rock and Reef – flying in to Sydney, then heading out to Uluru and on to the Great Barrier Reef. But if you expect to take a harbour cruise, climb the bridge, visit the Opera House, go out to the Hunter Valley, visit the Blue Mountains, surf at Bondi and wind down to the Aussie lifestyle in Sydney… it takes more than a couple of days! It would be a shame to be in any major gateway city and then find that you don’t have enough time to see and do the things you want to in the surrounding area. Leave yourself time to make the most of Sydney. Linda Buckingham, Travel Counsellor

  • There are plenty of options for an exotic Asian stopover when flying to Australia, including Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. If you just want to break the journey for an easy couple of nights, I’d recommend Singapore. It has good hotels, efficient transport and great restaurants – and don’t miss the night safari in Singapore Zoo. Nigel Tisdall, travel writer

  • Singapore Airlines offer a great Stopover Package – great hotels at great prices, free transfers to/from the airport and also some free tours in Singapore. Singapore Airlines have a good network of flights serving most Australian cities daily. Trevor Smith, Travel Counsellor

  • If you don't have the time to enjoy a stopover on the way to Australia, let your Travel Counsellor book you into one of the airport lounges in your transit airport. Shopping is tempting but a hot shower and a massage are a better way of getting your body ready for the next leg of the journey and help fend off jetlag. Linda Buckingham, Travel Counsellor

  • If you only drive one road in Australia, make it the Great Ocean Road between Adelaide and Melbourne – the scenery is breathtaking. Joanne Cowdery, Travel Counsellor

  • If you're planning a fly-drive holiday it's a good idea to look at the pre-planned tour itineraries of the area you want to visit. The tours will always visit the main attractions but if they all take a full day to get from A to B there's a fair chance that you will need to allow this much time too. What looks like a small distance on a map may be a different story when you're actually trying to drive it. Linda Buckingham, Travel Counsellor

  • Pre-booking day trips and excursions before you depart saves you valuable time when you are on holiday. Joanne Cowdery, Travel Counsellor
