Families: Head for the north coast resorts around Hania such as Kalives and Platanias, with their gently-sloping sand and abundant facilities. For teenagers in search of nightlife the north coast town of Agios Nikolaos offers a quieter alternative to Malia.
Romantics: Book a room with a sea view at the Porto Loutro Hotel in Loutro on the south coast. This tiny village, accessible only by boat, is sun-baked, slow-paced and thoroughly Cretan, with a small beach and a handful of good tavernas. The sunsets over the Libyan sea are picture-postcard perfect.
Walkers: The trans-European E4 walking trail runs from one end of Crete to the other, and divides into coastal and inland routes. For day hikes the Samaria Gorge is hard to beat, but the nearby Imbros Gorge is less crowded and shorter (about 8 km/5 miles).
City Breaks: Hania is the busiest and buzziest Cretan city. The stylish Casa Delfino Suites introduced the boutique hotel concept to the island, and the restaurants and bars around the old port are some of the most sophisticated in Crete.
