Paul Mansfield's report on Crete - Need To Know

Don’t try to see everything in one go: a return trip from north to south can take the best part of a day. In restaurants do as the locals do and order ligo apo ola – a little of everything. Small, shared pates of humus, tzatziki, salads, meatballs and the like are a fun (and inexpensive) way to eat. Watch out for Cretan specialities such as kalitsounia meat pie, and excellent Cretan wine from Sitia and Archanes. For the best traditional food head into the mountain villages such as Vamos or on to the south coast. Cretans eat late: from 2pm onwards for lunch, 9–10pm for dinner. Credit cards are still a rarity in many parts.
