Paul Mansfield's report on Crete - Tips
Posted On 02.07.07
Crete has two international airports, and if you’re heading to the quieter west of the island, make sure your flight is to Hania. Otherwise, the transfer from Iraklion airport can take more than two hours. Chris Wouldhave,

Crete has lots of great jewellery shops, with gold and silver much better value than in the UK. So you can treat yourself to an unusual item that you won’t find at home – for half the price. Lauren Savery, Travel Counsellor

The Thea Bar in Hania harbour – a first-floor terrace with great views and good cocktails – is the best spot on the island for people-watching. Go at early evening and peer down on the volta evening stroll. Paul Mansfield, travel writer

Walking down the Samaria Gorge takes between four and seven hours, depending on your fitness. Make sure you take water with you as there is nowhere in the gorge to buy any. As it is a national park, you are not allowed to remove so much as a flower. At the end you must get a ferry to another port – otherwise the only way back is up through the gorge!
Chris Wouldhave, Travel Counsellor

The little villages around Hersonissos are lovely, mainly Piskopiano and Koutouloufari. You could spend days wandering around. There are loads of bargains to be had and an amazing number of jewellery shops. Some practise the quaint custom of offering male customers some of the local raki and the ladies a glass of wine.
