Hire a car for at least a day to explore the villages of the interior, and the forested Troodos mountains. Head for the summit in winter and you can ski among the pines.
There are plans to make the Akamas peninsula in the north-east, with its wild, undeveloped and beautiful stretch of coast, into a national park. You can explore independently, but you will need a four-wheel drive car to negotiate the dirt tracks.
The Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI) is producing five booklets of tours to encourage visitors to explore inland – available locally in hotels and bookshops for a small price (£1.75/2.35 euro each ). To find out more about the CSTI, visit the website of The Travel Foundation (www.thetravelfoundation.org.uk), to which it is affiliated.
Some of the content of the magazine refers to flights or prices from the UK. At Travel Counsellors Ireland we can source flights from Ireland and provide full quotes in Euros. Please call me for latest availability and prices.
