Families with small children. While the new developments are being completed, the venerable old resort of Agadir is still the place for a proper beach holiday with kids’ clubs. But it’s not particularly Moroccan, so try to make a side-trip to Marrakech if you can. And by the way, Moroccans love kids – especially fair-haired ones – so be prepared for the attention yours will attract.
Romantic short breaks. A riad (converted merchant’s house) in Fez or in Marrakech is the place to go to ground in fabulous surroundings, although some of the more celebrated can be very highly priced. A better deal might be distinctive accommodation just outside the city itself; somewhere like the mud-walled Tigmi, for example, in the village of Tagadert.
Lazing and sunbathing. Essaouira is the laid-back seaside town with seafood restaurants on the harbour’s edge and chilled-out, distinctive small hotels.
Intrepid adventurers. Head for the hills. A variety of treks in the mountains can be arranged locally or in advance. The likes of the Kasbah du Toubkal, a former fortress in a stunning location and now a rustic hotel, will arrange single-day or several-day excursions.
