For anyone who can travel from London or the south-east of England, the Eurostar from Waterloo or Ashford is very fast (London to Paris in under three hours), check-in is quick and smooth, and you arrive right in the centre of the city, from where you can grab a taxi or take the Métro for easy access to all of Paris. Jessica Taylor, Travel Counsellor
The Crazy Horse Saloon, with its small stage and uncomfortable seats, is not the greatest show in town. The Moulin Rouge is a lot better – great show, great food, although drinks are very expensive once you’ve had the one drink that’s included in the price. Fiona Betteridge, Travel Counsellor
If it’s a lovely day, head to Versailles – you can get there in 30 minutes travelling by RER (line C). Rather than tour the main palace, which gets hideously crowded, take a picnic and walk down to the Domaine de Marie Antoinette, where you can visit the Petit Trianon and stroll around the queen’s country estate. Nigel Tisdall, travel writer
Queues to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower can be long: the wait is shortest first thing in the morning. Alternative scenic views of the city can be got from the terrace of Sacré-Coeur in Montmartre, from the dome of the Galeries Lafayette on boulevard Haussmann, or from the Tour Montparnasse – Europe’s fastest lift takes you in seconds to the panoramic bar on the 56th floor, then you can walk up to the roof terrace. If you plan to use buses or the Métro frequently, there are special tourist passes called Paris Visite, which give unlimited travel for one, three or five days. Alternatively, a book of tickets (carnet), available from any Métro station or tobacconist, buys you ten journeys for the price of seven. Peter Wilson, TC Customer
Treat yourself to a bit of luxury at the Royal Monceau hotel, minutes from the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Elysées. It has a beautiful covered garden restaurant and a fabulous spa and indoor pool, perfect for relaxing after all that sightseeing and retail therapy. Helen Walker, Travel Counsellor
Visit the uber-chic restaurant Georges at the top of the Pompidou Centre for spectacular views over Paris with your lunch or afternoon coffee. It’s even better in the evening, with a stunning view of the Eiffel Tower lighting up with twinkling lights for a few minutes on the hour – well worth the expensive price tag (dinner with wine about €75/£50 per head). Admission to the Louvre and some other museums is free on the first Sunday of each month – but get there early to avoid the queues. Trevor Smith, Travel Counsellor |
