Families with small children: head for Kololi, where the Senegambia hotel backs onto the beach. The hotel may be ageing, but it has extensive gardens with mini-zoos, playgrounds and a children’s pool.
Romantic short breaks: go to ground in one of the properties away from the main hotel drag, somewhere like the colonial-style Coconut Residence or the more contemporary Hibiscus House, which specialises in holistic treatments.
Lazing and sunbathing: best done on the deck of a boat pottering up the Gambia river. Many such trips start from Lamin Lodge, which also has a good seafood restaurant on stilts amongst the mangroves.
Intrepid adventurers: head 270 km (170 miles) inland to stay in semi-permanent tents on platforms overlooking Chimpanzee Island, where around 70 chimps are being rehabilitated. Alternatively, base yourself at the small Safari Garden hotel in Fajara, which is well plugged-in to everything intrepid and eco-friendly.
