Two of my girlfriends and I would like to pamper ourselves on a short break abroad this year. Can you suggest a good destination for a spa holiday? We’ve read about expensive places in Thailand and the Caribbean but we don’t want to travel such a distance for a few days. Are spa holidays always very expensive? Denise Mallory (by email)
Spa holidays do not always have to be expensive. I can personally recommend two excellent spa hotels in Paphos, Cyprus. The five-star Coral Beach Health and Beauty Spa is the most up-to-date and extensive resort spa on the island, blending fitness and exercise with indulgent beauty and body treatments that include reflexology and aromatherapy. The Azia Club Resort and Spa is ideal for privacy and indulgence. The hotel’s symbol is the asphodel which in Greek mythology represents the ultimate happiness of the soul. Prices here are from £49 (€72) per person per night B&B. At both spas you can pre-book whatever treatments you want and pay for them locally. There are now almost daily flights to Paphos from most UK airports so you can choose how long you stay. Sharon Little, Travel Counsellor
I recommend the Fortina Spa, Malta’s latest five-star hotel, which offers the only Spa Bedrooms in the world. They contain a hydrotherapy bath, high-pressure massage jets, a steam sauna, seaweed and mud treatments and stress-buster machines. Some of the rooms also have their own private seawater pools. All-inclusive prices for three nights from Gatwick start at around £600 (€880) and include all drinks and afternoon teas, two free treatments and a boat trip to Comino. The Hyatt Regency at La Manga, Spain, is a two-hour flight from the UK. La Manga has a brand new Spa Centre with more than 18 treatment rooms, a magnificent pool and sauna. My female clients tell me that the speciality Chocolate Wrap treatment is heaven at £94 (€140) for 75 minutes! Weekend prices are around £250 (€365) per person. Add in a good choice of low-cost flights and you have an ideal pick-me–up. Michael Edwards, Travel Counsellor
The Fonteverde Natural Spa Resort in Tuscany, Italy, offers lots of rejuvenating treatments, with the added bonus of wonderful views and activities that include horse-riding, mountain biking, walking tours and golf. You are looking at spending from around £100 (€147) per person per night for room-only, and with low-cost airlines flying daily into Pisa, you could make this quite an affordable short break. Hungary is exceptionally rich in medicinal and thermal waters, with over 40 million litres of warm mineral water gushing forth daily from more than 100 thermal springs and wells. Budapest is known as the spa capital of the world and its most famous health hotels, the Danubius Hotel Gellert and the Health Spa Resort Margitsziget for example, are built over these springs. With low-cost flights and its many spa hotels, Hungary makes for a reasonably inexpensive short break. Sam McCann, Travel Counsellor
There is a fantastic Thalassa Spa in Dinard in Normandy. To keep costs down, you could travel by car and ferry. Linda Chisholm, Travel Counsellor
How about an oriental hotel closer to home? The Mandarin Oriental has just opened a fabulous hotel in Prague. It’s a converted monastery with lead-in prices from £315 (€462) for three nights including breakfast, flights from Heathrow and transfers. Or how about a cruise? Royal Caribbean offers three nights from Barcelona from £399 (€585) including flights, all your meals, excellent entertainment and a fantastic spa. The treatments cost extra.
